My son was in halls of residence at Guildford uni. His room was £100/week bills included.So perhaps that accounts for most of the difference. He says he spends about £30 a week on food but cooks mostly from scratch in the flat kitchen. He used to cook a lot at home before he went so that made for good practise! Also halls of residence only charge for term time unlike rented houses! Overall costs were about £5000 in total plus of course tuition fees. Next year will probably be higher though as he is in rented accommodation next year with friends.He also tutored an a level student once a week which gave him an extra £20 which i haven't counted!
Good luck, I am sure they will all manage! My son has loved every minute of it!

Ds just finished at guildford and the cost is not remotely comparable with London sadly. Guildford is lovely, I'm sad he's leaving.
