Warning about Letting Agencies

Post by DanceDiva »

We are in the process of disputing the amount deducted from DD's deposit via a letting agency for her first year at college.

Please please don't leave the students to sign up tenancy agreements without you looking over the agreement, especially for the first year.
We read DD's tenancy agreement over and over again before signing and have still been stung for ridiculous reasons.
Understandably furious we will of course be arguing our corner - if anyone has any previous experience or tips we'd be most grateful but we have the photographic evidence thankfully so are hopeful.

The letting agency have been absolute bullies with the students but a totally different 'nicey nice' attitude with the parents which makes my blood boil to the point where I can only correspond by email now and leave the phone conversations to my OH !
Just a word of caution before they sign on the dotted line...................................

Was your deposit protected with something like the DPS. This is a legal matter. If so you can dispute the amount the letting agents are trying to withhold and the DPS with help sort it out. Do not let them keep the money. If they have not protected the deposit (your daughter would have received an email from the deposit company when she moved in) you can sue them for up to 3x the amount of the deposit.
