Lamda knowledge

Post by George'smum »

Hi there, my daughter has her grade 6 musical theatre exam in a few weeks time. She needs to know about the style of her songs. I'm not sure what she's supposed to answer? Her songs are all musical theatre style, I'm not sure how to be more specific. One is perhaps a little bit jazzy but the other is from Oliver and one from evita. What sort of words should she be using? I'd be very grateful for any help with this. Many thanks

In the syllabus there is a list a and a list b for grade 6 and up. The genre and style of song comes from there. Book musical, ballad etc There is also a glossary that gives you the definition. You should find it on the LAMDA website. Hope that helps. Feel free to PM If stuck as I teach LAMDA :)

Hi, thanks very much for your reply. I've just had a look at the syllabus again and it just says own choice of song (one before 1980, one after and one of any era)? So she's not taken her songs from a list as far as I know. Hoping she's not got the wrong ones! Thanks again

There is a list on the teacher support section but it is only suggested repertoire.

Musical theatre styles include but are not limited to:

Operetta
Jazz Standard
Legit/Golden Age (Rogers & Hammerstein/Lerner & Lowe etc)
Post Golden Age (Kander & Ebb etc)
Sondheim
Musical Theatre Pop (rock/50's/60's/70's etc)
Musical Theatre Pop (Modern)
Pop/Rock Opera
Jukebox
Disney (but can also incorporate the above)

Then within that you have individual songs that are ballads, comedy songs, etc
