Auditioning for 2021 entry

My dd got an email today from Urdang stating that there will only be 2 terms of tuition. I know that it used to be the case that the summer term was optional and was at extra cost but thought this had been scrapped?
Anyone got any knowledge of this?

I remember feeling a little concerned when I heard there were only 2 terms ! Our experience is based on this year - summer term is optional but most seem to opt in and there is a full timetable of show rehearsals together with classes in all genres that the students can sign up for on a daily basis. There has been no extra charge.The show is taking place in early July (streamed) and this year, Urdang have offered 2 extra weeks of training for the 1st and 2nd years- to help make up for face to face classes that were missed due to Covid - which is great

I think they have all done incredibly well in such uncertain times and having to adapt and film all of these different requirements with record numbers of applicants. I applaud them and yes maybe you can do re-takes etc but at least with a 'real' audition you know you have definitely been watched regardless of the outcome. Pros and cons and I do think some colleges will keep an element of self-taping as Urdang have said it is most likely. It is easier and cheaper for them, but I so think our DC deserve pats on the back and hope wherever they are heading off to they will dream big and embrace what their courses have to offer.

You get the advantage you can retake but the disadvantage that they can pick up on the smallest mistake and re-watch it. Plus mine was applying for straight acting courses and frequently they weren't watched to the end (for some daughter could find this out via an app) with a modern day monologue there can be a twist at the end where it changes the whole narrative and the way it's been told. Plus you only get the monologues with acting to audition with, so if you've not been watched/not been watched to the end your chances of acceptance have further diminished.

I think self tapes for first audition are going to become more the norm.

The worst part about self taping is that performing for camera is very different to performing to a live audience in a big theatre. It could change the type of candidates who are offered places? I’m sure the colleges are able to see past that but it’s all new to them too. It’s been great to read so many success stories on this board. Well done to you all!

Absolutely, screen acting and stage acting are different. Even for the straight acting courses, there was only a handful of drama schools who acknowledged this difference and gave the instructions on which to do when filming audition self tapes.

Yes it is hard to have the same adrenaline and show your passion when filming yourself over and over and each take they get more critical. So I think they've done so well!

It would have been useful if they put that information in the email!
That’s certainly put our minds at rest. I was concerned that there was going to be an extra cost involved or that there was less course content than other courses.

DD waited 6 weeks for her Urdang recall result and was then told she was being considered for full funding with an offer of the diploma. Here we are 4 weeks later still without confirmation; yes or no . As the UCAS deadline was last Thursday she’s accepted Performers as her firm choice. So it looks like she’s off there in September unless we get funding confirmation from Urdang which at this moment I’m not holding my breath on. So I’ve started getting her organised with uniform, etc.

It’s been very quiet!
How is everyone getting on since the ucas deadline?
My daughter has accepted bird with performers as 2nd choice.
She’s excited but nervous too.
She is thinking she’ll have to go in halls which isn’t what she wanted but at least it’s only for the first year.

I hope anyone waiting on reserve lists or funding doesn’t have too much longer to wait.

DD received her last offer before 20th May so she had to accept her offers by 10th June. Did your DS get his final result after the 20th May? If he did, then he would have had the later deadline.

DS got his last offer before 20th May and the deadline was 10th June on UCAS but then on 7th June another letter was uploaded with a revised deadline of 14th July

That’s really good, a longer deadline is quite useful.
