Auditioning for 2024 entry

Do/did any dc’s go to the RCS in Glasgow? I would be curious to hear of any experiences. Dd has her final recall next week and although was not really considering it when she applied thinking she won’t get this close, she’s starting to warm at the idea of the possibility of going there if she gets an offer. She always said (and still does) that she wants to be in/near London, but likes the idea of studying in a big city like Glasgow. Obviously she’ll get a feel for it when she auditions but I’m curious to hear people’s experiences. We are aware that she might not get an offer, in which case problem solved. But if she does, we would like to be as informed as possible.

With the auditions coming to an end, it’s starting to feel very exciting knowing that she will definitely be going somewhere this year!

My DD attended RB foundation in Edinburgh a few years ago (it no longer runs) where the staff were from RCS. They were all amazing tutors. DD got an automatic audition (can't remember if it was 2nd or final she had) from RCS due to where she had studied, back then it was online and her course had just finished and she'd started working as an actor at a tourist attraction back home . She asked if her online audition could be changed to accommodate this explaining the issue (she didn't want her new employers to know she was still auditioning for degrees and had only just started so couldn't book a day off) and they were less than helpful. I appreciate it might not be possible to rearrange a date but the response she had which was pretty much they expected her to let down her employer and a paying audience in order to attend an audition she may not be successful at, could have been better handled IMO. Consequently she had to cancel it. I'd say teaching brill, but ensure that you don't leave anything to chance going wrong on audition day. Glasgow itself she never visited and I've never been so unable to comment.

Thanks lawn, I see your point. You wouldn’t expect changing an online audition to be such an issue.

We are going the day before so we’ll have time to explore the city as much as possible and I made sure to book a hotel within walking distance to the school. Hearing that your dd was happy with the teaching sounds reassuring.

Just when I thought we were getting to the end the waiting is extended with 2 ‘wait list’ for Mountview Actor Muso and Conti MT which could take us well into July and beyond. Also still waiting on EDA and GSA foundation outcomes. May need more to get through the waiting - our DCs are so resilient!

I totally get you! The waiting is so hard! Does your dd have any more auditions to do, any offers? Mine has an offer from GSA and two more auditions to do, so whatever happens she’s got somewhere to go. That takes some of the pressure off, but she’s always wanted RB so if she doesn’t get in it will hurt, especially as she knows she’s definitely going somewhere else. She wouldn’t turn down an offer at GSA for the off chance she might get in next year.
Fingers crossed they get a place, but like you said, my dd had a strong positive feeling after the second round, she’s not so sure this time.

What two auditions have you still got to do? Does your DD prefer RB over GSA? She’s done really well to get an offer there, seems very competitive. We didn’t go for that one, well actually she has in past auditioned for MT there.

RB has always been her top choice, but she also likes GSA and knows she’s very lucky to have an offer there which she would gladly accept, just feels like she would be better suited to RB. Still has Oxford and RCS final recalls to do. She liked the sound of the course at Oxford when she went to the open day but thought it would be too remote for her location wise, as it’s somewhere on the outskirts of Oxford. She only applied for foundation but was recalled for the 3 year acting course which she’s decided to do and see what happens. RCS recall is in Glasgow, so it’s a good opportunity to see the school, as first round was on zoom and second in London.

Interesting you mentioned your dd applied for MT in the past, has she applied for both MT and acting this time around or acting only? My dd has an MT background but decided she wants to do acting.

So first year was MT only though focused on the more actor led ones, last year she was recovering from vocal surgery (a long process but glad she got it sorted before entering professional training) so she decided to audition for acting as didn’t need to sing, didn’t get a place but realised the standard of acting was so much better than on the MT courses and it just crystallised into wanting to have that full on actor training so this year was first time of applying to Guildhall, Rose Bruford etc and got to finals. She said she knew she wouldn’t have been able to handle those auditions at 18, she feels ready now. So a journey! If it ends in an offer, we can look back and say it was all for a reason!! Or even without tbh.

Also wanted to wish your daughter best of luck for RCS - I know little about it, but it’s one of the top schools for sure. Enjoy Glasgow!

Please don’t worry, my dd took a year out, this was her second year auditioning. She didn’t want to do a foundation last year and although she auditioned for degree courses, knowing how unlikely it is to get in at 17 (she turned 18 at the end of July), she didn’t get any offers. She just needed a break and it definitely worked in her favour. She found it difficult to start with, especially in September when all her friends were moving out and starting their courses, but she got used to it. She signed up for a couple of NYT short courses, which she found incredibly enjoyable, made new friends and new connections. She was lucky to have a couple of external opportunities through NYT, a potential new play workshop at the National Theatre and a short student film, which she couldn’t have done as a full time student, as she pointed out recently. She also used her free time to see lots of plays, signed up to ticket deals and got quite a few cheap tickets. She worked part time (still does), visited her friends at uni, and just enjoyed her free time after a hectic couple of years doing MT sixth form! She matured a lot this last year and I think that definitely showed in her auditions, she got much further than we expected, with one offer so far and waiting to hear from 2 more. One year can seem like an eternity but it goes so fast, believe me! My advice to your DC is to sign up for some short courses if they can, to keep up the training as much as possible (I realise it’s different for MT, mine only wanted to do acting), and just enjoy life! There’s more advice/suggestions from other people in a similar situation if you look on last year’s posts. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that @sailorgirluae. Which school/course is she on the reserve list for? My DD knows of someone who recently dropped out of a foundation as they had a late BA offer, so movement still happening.

She thinks the audition went well and the school facilities were amazing - stunning theatre, 90 studios in total (for all courses), nice cafe and living areas for students, friendly receptionists and lovely tutors (the ones she met in the audition). Unfortunately she wasn’t too keen on Glasgow itself and I’m not sure the school is enough for her to want to go there. Where she is based means a lot to her, so we’ll see what happens if she gets an offer. Still a long shot, there’s 80 in the final for 24 places.

Reserve for foundation at EDA and Conti and Actor Muso at Mountview.

Will definitely look at what NYT and NYMT have to offer to keep up her skills over the year.
