Learning an accent?

Post by sapphire »

DD has an audition in a few weeks and needs to speak in an American accent! Does anyone have any hints and tips for picking up accents?

Try looking on Youtube. I have found accent tutorials on there when my ds was trying to learn a particular accent. Youtube is great for anything!
All new to me!

Hi there

This is a good one to try too!

It would be useful to try to find out whether they will be looking for "General American" or something more specific like Californian or New Hampshire or New York or Tennessee.

It can be helpful to pick on very specific things that are done differently (for example, in many - though not all - American dialects, the "r" is sounded in words like "park" whereas in many - though not all - English dialects it is pronounced "pah - k" ). You can also spot interesting tendencies in intonation e.g. there might be quite a monotone delivery of most of the sentence with an upward inflection at the end even though it's not a question (this varies from dialect to dialect too)!

If all else fails then how about all those re-runs of American series back to back on TV!
