"Friendship" from Anything goes

Post by Nicola »

I'm looking for sheet music for this for a duet for a festival - simple task you may well think, coming as it does from a famous Cole Porter musical. There's a catch though - So far I have bought and begged three different versions. One version is absolutely perfect but I only have a performance photocopy, which can't be given to the adjudicator of a festival; the other two versions are acceptable but wrong for other reasons (one is a 2-part - which IS what we want, but it's harmonised all the way through rather than just the chorus, and the other is ALMOST right, but the words are different, the accompaniment isn't as nice, there's no key change and it doesn't have the twiddly bits or good ending that the stage version has.)

My last hope is a "revival version" of the "Anything goes" show score, which I can buy from Amazon, but I'm loathe to order this, only to find it's one of the versions I've already got that's no good.

So, does anybody have any Cole Porter anthologies or Anything Goes music amongst their collections - I don't need your copy, I just need to know which book to buy!! Or failing that, any suggestions which I may not have already tried (although I do consider myself a "champion googler", so don't be surprised if everything you come up with I've already tried!!)

Thanks in anticipation of all your fantastic suggestions!!!!!!!

You should try contacting "Taximom" on this forum. I needed sheet music transposed in to a particular key for my dd for Tring Park audition, she was extremely helpful and got me everything I needed and it was delivered next day - fantastic! DD was successful and was offered a part scholarship place at Tring Park (but that's a whole 'nother story!!) Good luck :)

Hi Nicola!
I have an Anything Goes anthology, but I think it could be the second one which you are talking about which is almost right! It's only 2-part harmonised in the chorus but I'm not sure that all of the verses are in, and it doesn't have the cool end bit (quack quack quack? What am I a duck?!) which is a shame. I don't know how the accompaniment compares to others cos this is the only one I have. So this probably isn't what you're looking for (sorry!) but just in case you're interested, this is what it says:
ANYTHING GOES - Vocal Selections - Revival Edition
Warner Bros. Publications
ISBN 0-943351-60-X

It could in fact be the revival version from Amazon, cos that's probably where we bought it from, so if anything, that may let you know that you DON'T want the Amazon revivial edition! Anyway, sorry if this was useless, but I thought I'd just let you know in case! x

Hi Nicola!
I have an Anything Goes anthology
YAY!!! Then you're my new best friend!!! Although I do fear it's the version I've got here that I downloaded from musicnotes. Now there's an easy way to tell - in the version I'm after, the first verse goes "if you're ever in a jam, here I am. If you ever need a pal, I'm your gal". THAT'S the version I want, but the version that I have in a usable form has the first verse words "if you're ever in a jam, here I am. If you're ever in a mess, SOS"

Obviously the words aren't crucial (although like you, I'm very fond of the "quack, quack, quack"!!) but I think they'll signify which version it is.

And even if you tell me it's the same version I've already got, then you've still helped enormously, as it means I won't need to waste money ordering the book, which only contains the version I already have - so thanks for posting!

And thanks too to Reachforthestars - PM wending its way to taximom, just in case she has any bright ideas!

It just seems MAD that I KNOW the stage version exists - I even have a copy of the music (the photocopy from school of the performance version) and yet despite my best efforts, I seem unable to procure it?!

No ISBN number on this copy - I think it's because the school did the show last year, so the pages he's photocopied for me are only p72-81 of the whole show score. ](*,) :(

Thanks Taximom - if you have any joy, let me know...

I think I have the same one as you Nicola, it also says SOS... but couldn't you just substitute in the right words? Surely it would still fit?
Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

well apparently, for festivals at least, it must be sung as written - although the words aren't so much the sticking point as the accompaniment - on my favourite version it's really jazzy, it changes key half way through and there's a big ending. On the other version all these bits are missing..

Oh well, thanks for checking anyway..

Would it be possible to borrow a proper copy from school or could you ask them for the published details?

Well I get the impression from the school that they only had the copy licensed for their performance time - which was last year, or is that wrong and does it not work like that? This is what the teacher put to be precise:

"The version that we used is only available on theatrical license and we only have a photocopy. It is unlikely that a music festival will accept a photocopy. I suggest that, if you find the arrangement suitable, you check with the Festival that they will accept a copy"

..but it clearly says in the festival T&Cs that photocopies are not acceptable.

I COULD however ask for the publishing details....although in light of what he says about theatrical license I do wonder if I'm wasting my time?!

I maybe being naive, but can't you get these kind of things from a large town's (music) library in the same way as you can opera scores, etc Maybe worth calling your nearest large library to find out.

Well thanks for the suggestion, Claret - I don't really understand how it works either so I'll definitely give them a call in the morning in case you're right!

They will have hired the scores and librettos from the rights holders for the duration of the show only.

Would it be possible to do something like play it into Sibelius and print that off?

Sometimes if you contact the rights holders and explain that it is for a festival they will send you an authorised copy of a particular song. Might be worth a try.

Also I used to reserve show scores from the library.
