tax returns
I have just spent a frustrating and fruitless day on the phone trying to set my son up to submit a tax return. He is under 16 so doesnt have a national insurance number. the tax office says he must have one before they can issue self emloyed unique tax code. the NI office says he cant have one so what do I do? I've given up with calling and e mailing. Surely someone on this site must have experience of this. Does anyone have any reliable information as to what i'm supposed to do?

Re: tax returns
I dont think you need one for tax returns I did this for my son untill he was 16 and got his NI number, before that just filled in the form with out his number as he did not have to have one did not have any trouble they did not say he need one as he was under 16 filled it in from he was 8 till this year now he dose it himself, when they reach 16 or just before they get sent there NI number hope that helps
Re: tax returns
does an actor count as self-employed? mine has always been treated as being employed in terms of documentation from theatres and film companies, when they've bothered - tho he hasn't broken the tax threshold, so it hasn't come to form filling

Re: tax returns
Yes actors are counted as self-employed but if they do theatre they do that but if they earn over the threashhold then they have to fill in tax returns. 19 year old has been in 45 adverts so there where a few years he earnt a lot of money trouble is once u have had to fill in one u have to do it every year from then onwards ds earned more for 3 or 4 years but when he stoped at 11 still had to fill in every year still do even though he is employed now so the best thing is to Earn just below that. Usaly don't have to pay much tax as u can put most things down against tax like train tickets drama dance singing lessons hair cuts cloths keep all receipts as there are lots u can put against tax circa few years we imployed an account that went aginst tax as well.

ooh - that's good advice to keep receipts
what do you do wrt london travel irishdancer - we have oystercards, so don't have receipts for individual days' travel - is it better to buy travelcards and hang on to them?
