Gap Year Ideas

Post by Headliner »

Basically i didnt get into any drama schools this year, and didnt get into uni either. Im wondering what i can do with my gap year. I dont particularly want to go travelling, because i want to continue going to auditions for drama school and ones from my agent. Really, i want to do something/s that will impress drama schools. I want to volunteer at some theatres, but apart from that i cant really think of anything that i can do that will benefit me 'drama wise'. Anyone got any suggestions??

Volunteering at a local youth theatre is fun and also impresses employers/unis - I remember I got asked about it a lot when I was applying! Also taking part in a local amdram shows commitment aswell as honing your acting skills (and again is a lot of fun!)

Both my DDs have had gap years - great idea I think as the extra years maturity is a good basis before starting higher education. My eldest chose to do her gap year =- she worked for 3 months in an orphanage in South america and followed it with 2 months travelling to other countries over there.

My younger Dd was like you, didn't get into drama school first time round. She carried on with her own drama, singing, dance etc, but also got involved in production at her her youth theare group. This meant she now has a much better idea of what putting on aproduction means - from getting the rights, running rehearsals, directing scenes, deciding on props, secenery etc., programme design and production, lighting, running band call, front of house - she has done all those things now, so could talk more knowledgely in interviews. She also watched theatre perfromances when she could and made an effort to see "quality" films.

However, she has also had a full time job - this has made her more self reliant, improved time management, communication and organisational skills. All the drama colleges this year asked a bit about her job - think they liked that she had some "life experience", not just straight from education.

Don't forget that as well as this you have to choose and prepare your audition pieces!!

Hope al goes well for you :)
