Musical Theatre Audition

Post by DancingQueen191 »

Hi everyone,
Ive got an audition for the third youngest daughter in Fiddler on The Roof and was just wondering what should i prepare for the audition?
How many songs should I have and should they be from musicals?
Should I prepare a dance and what style should I use?~ballet, tap, hip hop, jazz
What monologue should i use and should it be from a musical or should i use a poem??
They havent really given out any details, just a time and place and that i should have an audition piece prepared.
Very worried!!(and confused!)
Please, if you can give any advice or recomendations,I would VERY grateful!
Thanx,
DancingQueen191 xx :D :D

This is obviously for people who know what they are doing, I emailed the director my details and he told me to go along to the audition!Touble is , I havent really got a clue about musicals and have never been in one,well...i was,but only in the chorus :D

Usually it is best to prepare an MT song for an MT audition - preferably more than one to give contrast. I am suprised they haven't been more specific - they should have told you what she will be required to do in the audition. Could you phone and ask for more details?

How old are you? Is this for an amateur production and if so is it a youth company or adult company.

I would prepare a musical theatre song in the same sort of style as the show you are auditioning for and if possible have a contrasting song too. Look at shows that were written around the same sort of time as Fiddler or with a similar sort of character than the one you are auditioning for. Perhaps look up who played that character originally on Broadway and look for other shows that actress did.

If they do a dance audition I would imagine that they teach you all a routine then watch you perfom it.

When I used to audition for youth theatre productions they told you which song to prepare (it was always the main one that character sang) and which section of the script in advance (you were taught them at a pre-audition workshop) so obviously different companies do them differently. Professional performers would have an audition folder of suitable stuff ready.

Take sheet music with all cuts clearly marked. Set the tempo you want by humming a little along to the pianist first. Don't attempt to beat time unless you are very experienced as you usually go too fast through nerves or don't get it quite right.
