Theatre school for secondary school

Post by sophiesocks »

Hi, I was just wondering what made people choose to send their children to full time theatre schools and what it was that made them realise it was the right choice for their child. Are the children who attend all very successful performers, do you find that lots of them have performed in large productions or are there many who have not had much stage experience.

Thanks :)

hi
my dd was a saturday student at SY and was asked if she was auditioning for full time school...We had not really thought about it at the time, but she was in the agency and had a little success on stage etc...we asked her what she wanted to do and she really wanted to go for it....so without holding out much hope of a place (due to the number of very talented children that apply) and even if she was successful, we were worried about the cost, we went for it.

much to our amazement she was one of the lucky 16 who started in yr 6 many years ago!!...it was the best decision we ever made as she absolutely thrived academically and vocationally! (gcse passes at A*'s A's and B's
She spent 6 very happy years there and was even head girl in yr 11 (very proud of her). She successfully auditioned for some of the top vocational colleges in London, but as money was tight she is now at a non fee paying college doing a dance diploma and has her feet very firmly on the ground...It is hard work but she is loving it....

We would most definitely scrimp and save to do it all again....

I would say go for it!
Good luck x
I believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way.......

It's a few years ago now but ds was offered a place at SY with some funding and I'm sure he would have been very happy and successful there. We decided against it in the end because he is an all rounder and his current school (also fee paying) offers the music and sport too which he would have missed out on at SY.
He had had lots of stage experience but hadn't been involved in any major West End shows - so don't let inexperience stop you from applying, they will spot the potential in your child.
During the audition process I loved visiting SY - it had a real buzz about it, a lovely atmosphere. Good luck making the right choice for your youngster 8)
