Oxford school of Drama

Post by Sessex »

Anyone going to the open day this week? Taking my DS so she can get an understanding of what's required at Drama School!

Hello, DD and I are due to go, really like the sound of the afternoon as they get to see acting workshops and the teaching. DD also recently went to Drama Centre Open Afternoon - she said it was amazing, and they all got to watch a play. (2,000 applicants, 16 places - gulp!) So yes, we are due to go on Thursday but I am concerned about missing a whole day off school (I wouldn't normally be - but she is missing loads of school at the moment as she is in a Panto) - so not sure what to do. If we don't make it to Oxford, I'd really appreciate knowing what you thought. Perhaps you wouldn't mind posting?

thanks all. il post a reply after the visit to advise thoughts. I am also concerned about taking her out for a whole day ( especically as she is behind on her a level course work and only seems interested in going to drama school ). Ofter heard refrain from her is " but Dad it doesnt matter about A levels as Drama schools only rely on the audition....!" She is 17 soon to be 18.

went to the open day at OSOD. Small school ( 36 on the Foundation course , 16 on the 3 or 1 year degree ). location is in middle of countryside so DD was a bit disturbed about the lack of possible nightlife ! the school is VERY focused on teaching and the workshops were of very high standard with very enthusiastic teaching staff. if you don't mind the quite location and are serious about your career I definitely got the feeling that this is a terrific place to go and learn your trade. As the principle says they only take the super talented and the students seemed very focused and capable. Highly Recommended.

I think most of the students live in Oxford when they study there and get the subsidised bus in to the school - so evening and weekend socialising is in Oxford. I lived in a lovely little village when I studied there - but then I was 47 and more interested in a comfy bed and a lovely view than the night life - and I was heading back to the Peak District most weekends unless there were extra lessons or rehearsals.

There's certainly very little extra curricular centred round the school, pretty well everyone leaves on the bus at the same time - it's not like RADA or somewhere like that where there's a bar (and where there are lots of pubs within walking distance). I absolutely loved being in the middle of the countryside: learning lines sitting under the trees and listening to bird song - but it wouldn't suit everyone.
